John Deere & Jesus
The Story Behind The Song!It is always interesting to know how a song is birthed. This is the story of "John Deere & Jesus."
I was talking to a friend of mine from Nashville, TN and he asked me if I could write him a song for their upcoming summer tour. He had mentioned that John Deere was sponsoring some of their concerts and how he'd like a song that combined the famous tractor and Jesus. I went to work jotting down some ideas we had talked about. I'm very familiar with John Deere. The John Deere tractor I'm standing by actually sits on our farm in Oklahoma. It's a 1940's model that runs on propane, and still drives around making that famous popping sound. When I write a song I usually try to get a great hook first. The hook line needs to stand out and catch the listeners ear, "John Deere & Jesus" was the hook I needed. I actually wrote the song in about thirty minutes. Some songs take minutes and others take days and even years. I have many unfinished songs that still rest in the folders of my laptop. When I recorded the song I wasn't sure how it would go over in the "traditional" church setting; howevr, the song became a big hit. It was requested to be sung at the funeral of a man that collected the tractors. I also performed the song durring a revival and a girl received Christ after hearing the song because it brought back memories of her Grandfather that was a Christian. So writers, keep writing and searching for the hook that will lead people to Christ!
